A Missouri River Port

Yankton achieved its early prominence as a bustling river port on the upper Missouri River. In this role, Yankton became the trade and transportation center of Dakota Territory. This then led to its political prominence within the Territory. Yankton became the first territorial capital of Dakota and the leader of the statehood movement.
