Buonaiuto Lorini and the Design of Fortifications in Late Sixteenth-Century Treatises

The object of study of this paper is the theoretical-practical scope of the treatise by military engineer Buonaiuto Lorini entitled Le fortificationi di Buonaiuto Lorini […] Doue si mostra, con la scienza, e con la pratica, l’ordine di fortificare le città, & altri luoghi, con tutti gli avvertimenti, che possono apportare beneficio per la sicurtà delle Fortezze edited in Venice in 1609. In highlighting the significant role of design in the conception and graphic representation of late 16th-century fortified architectural projects, the treatise formalizes the procedural transition introduced by Giacomo De Lantieri in 1599. This transition is underscored through the procedural integration for the design of bastioned defenses, combining the logical-deductive process of the geometric method (drawing on paper) with the outcome of direct experience in ‘attack-defense’ phenomena for efficiency verification (drawing on the ground). Within this context, the paper analyzes the crucial function played by design in the defense design process by applying Euclidean geometric principles to configure optimal architectural solutions. This involves investigating geometric methods for representing defensive projects and analyzing related typological schemes.
