The boom in the reliability of wireless communication devices has led to a growing demand for reliable and efficient wireless networks in buildings. However, designing and optimizing wireless networks in complex indoor environments is a challenging task due to factors such as signal propagation, interference, and coverage gaps. Traditional methods for wireless network design rely on manual calculations and time-consuming site surveys, which can be error-prone and inefficient. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a methodology for the automatic computation of path loss in wireless communication equipment using Building Information Modeling (BIM). The proposed methodology leverages the rich information available in BIM models to extract relevant parameters for path loss calculation. It then employs a genetic algorithm to optimize the placement of access points (APs) maximize coverage. Additionally, the methodology estimates the quantity of AP devices required and other necessary equipment for the installation. The methodology enables BIM designers to efficiently plan and optimize wireless communication coverage systems in buildings. It streamlines the design process by automating the path loss computation and AP placement, reducing the time required for wireless network design. The methodology is implemented as a Revit plugin, making it easily accessible to designers working with BIM software.
