Spiral Contours of Memory

This paper unveils a geometric analysis and layered narrative within a spiral-shaped design in the June 5th Memorial Park (2013–2018) in Philadelphia, commemorating lives lost to a demolition collapse. The spiral is located at the epicenter, marking the victims’ discovery sites; the form combines the Archimedean spiral's predictability with the infinite expansion of the logarithmic spiral. This spiral symbolizes the complex relationship between memory and time and serves as a tangible and symbolic place of remembrance. Its construction includes contributions from the victims’ families, who helped shape the spiral's form and embedded phosphorescent glow stones, weaving personal narratives with the collective memory of the site. Through construction imagery and geometric analysis, this paper presents the spiral as a manifold storyteller, interweaving the process of mourning with an enhanced consciousness of demolition safety. By integrating trauma theories by Butler (2004) and LaCapra (1999), the exploration provides a perspective on how geometric form influences cultural understanding, fostering community cohesion and engraving a contoured narrative of memory within the urban landscape.
