BioImage Analysis of Leaf Morphology Applied in Biomimetic Geometry Design Approach

The bioimage analysis has great significance in many life sciences like biology, medicine or even in ecology, as this type of image analysis involves biological image sources. But how could the bioimage analysis be used in design? This research paper explores how this type of analysis could be used in biomimetic geometry design approach as research-based design type. We used the Image J application for analysis of leaf images. The ImageJ application presents an open tool for the analysis of scientific images. The bioimage analysis was conducted on three plant species: Carpinus betulus, Quercus robur L. and Platanus x acerifolia. The leaf morphology of these three plant species was analyzed for its shape and veins characteristics. We also investigated the possibilities of generating the geometrical concept – Voronoi tessellation on the base images. After gathering the biological data and generating desired images, they were included into a 3D modeling software. The results of this research present the three 3D models which were carried in the form of conceptual art installations. Two conceptual art installations (Carpinus betulus and Quercus robur L.) were carried at the urban forest complex Avala and the third conceptual art installation (Platanus x acerifolia) were carried at the Topčiderski park. We used these species as plant ambassadors of the two chosen sites in this research. The conceptual art installations could be used as marketing tools in order to educate citizens about the plant species.
