Interior Spaces Depicted by Stanley Kubrick

The concept of perspective projection, especially the use of one-point perspective—a revolutionary technique developed during the Renaissance—has significantly influenced the aesthetic configuration of interior spaces since its inception. Notably, interiors from the Early Modern (Baroque, Rococo) and Late Modern periods exhibit archetypal designs characterized by the strategic placement of elegant furnishings within seemingly uniform or homogenized cubic architectural structures. Stanley Kubrick (1928–1999), an illustrious filmmaker, masterfully portrayed interiors and related settings such as rooms, corridors, and courtyards, often employing a one-point perspective to capture these environments. His depiction of settings from the Baroque or Rococo era, as well as Late Modern interiors adorned with avant-garde furniture, exemplifies the symbiotic integration of architecture and furniture. This study explores the relationship between the interior spaces depicted by Kubrick and the characteristics of corresponding architectural spaces, particularly emphasizing the placement and symbolism of objects within these interior settings.
