Architectural Triangular Plans of Gianugo Polesello

This study reveals planning method of equilateral triangular plan in architectures designed by Gianugo Polesello (1930–2007), who was the first collaborator of Italian architect Aldo Rossi. Polesello repeated geometrical components, including the equilateral triangular plane. In order to clarify Polesello’s intention for designing equilateral triangular planes, five architectural works are selected and modeled by ourselves. One of the intentions of using equilateral triangular planes is not to create a facade. The triangular planes are arranged to take advantage of the form of the triangular planes, which do not show a triangle in its facade. Surrounded by three layers of walls or pillars, the triangular building can make the surrounding buildings stand out more, or conversely, it can become symbolic compared to the surrounding environment, giving the equilateral triangle a sense of symbolic presence. Another intention is to guide circulation. Unlike other polygons, it can make acute angles and the smallest floor area. Therefore, a new space can be created, and circulation can be generated there. In addition, the acute angles can create circulation with a sense of tension inside the triangle and circulation with openness of circumstance.
