Trick of Doors

This paper focuses on Luigi Caccia Dominioni (1913–2016), an architect based in Milan during the post-war Neorealist period. The study aims to explore the methodology and unique characteristics of space segmentation using doors, windows, and other fixtures in his architectural designs. Firstly, an interview with Dominioni in his later years led to the extraction of three intents in his design. Then, based on these intents, we analyzed the Housing on Via Vigoni. As a result, we could correlate them with four distinct techniques. In conclusion, it becomes evident that Dominioni developed his consistent and distinctive style in post-war Milan not only for the singular function of room entry but also by employing various “tricks” in elements like doors, windows, and other fixtures. His style reflects his intention to form a space for welcoming guests, allowing the quality of the space to change between private everyday life and the moment of welcoming guests.
