PM10 and PM2.5 Particulate Matter Monitoring Systems: A Systematic Review of the Literature

Air quality monitoring is an increasingly relevant and troubling activity in many urban areas that are exposed to high levels of pollution. Two of the most frequent pollutants are particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5, which can have adverse effects on people’s health when inhaled. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 90% of the population has been exposed to elevated levels of PM2.5, leading to the establishment of new air quality guidelines. In this context, a systematic review of monitoring systems for PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations was conducted, based on four research questions using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses) methodology. The aim was to identify the types of sensors, wireless connectivity, controller models, and commercial sensors most commonly used in air quality monitoring. A total of 671 articles from the IEEE, Scopus, and Springer databases were reviewed. After applying the selection process according to the methodology, 40 articles were included and thoroughly analyzed to address the research questions effectively.
