Development of a Python Program for Converting Spanish Math PDFs Into Braille

Blind individuals face significant educational challenges, particularly in mathematics, owing to the complexity of symbols and the limited support available. In response to this issue, we have developed a Python program named “Tomath” designed to convert Spanish PDF files into Braille, incorporating mathematical symbols. By leveraging the Nemeth code, a Braille standard for mathematics, this work aims to enhance accessibility to math education for the visually impaired. Tomath effectively converts PDFs into Braille, providing crucial support for blind individuals in their mathematics education. In testing, using ten documents, an average accuracy rate of 83.46% was achieved, despite challenges in handling unsupported characters and long strings. Although the program’s execution time was slightly slower than anticipated, its response to errors varied. Our future development efforts are focused on creating a user-friendly graphical interface, along with improvements in performance and text consistency.
