ESG: Carbon and Biodiversity a Problem or an Opportunity for Smart Agriculture?

  • José Rafael Marques da Silva

摘要

The concept of ESG and smart agriculture is revolutionizing food production by integrating cutting-edge technologies to optimize agricultural processes. This ESG holistic approach not only aims to enhance efficiency and resilience in food production, but also mitigation of environmental impact, addressing concerns such as carbon emissions and biodiversity loss. By maximizing crop yields while minimizing the utilization of finite natural resources, smart agriculture contributes significantly to environmental and social sustainability. By prioritizing the adoption of ESG and sustainable agricultural practices, agricultural organizations not only bolster food security, but also foster biodiversity conservation, thereby generating a positive impact on local communities. This leads to the creation of economic opportunities and an overall improvement in quality of life. Furthermore, the ESG European regulation aligned with the voluntary carbon markets presents new business prospects for farmers, particularly those facing challenges in competitive food production due to factors such as poor soil quality or steep terrain. At the farm level, farmers can be categorized into three main groups: those dedicated solely to food production, those solely focused on environmental conservation, and those capable of balancing both aspects simultaneously. Nevertheless, all farms should align with ESG and smart agriculture principles in order to reduce risk competitive issues.
