The Decolonial Museum

This chapter explores diverse aspects of public museums as sites of memory practice, including institutions, public art precincts, sites of trauma and exhibitions. The first section looks at the interconnected public and private realms of display, including the virtual. Museum cultures and their historical provenance are then examined through a variety of discursive lenses, including decolonial perspectives, emerging pedagogical approaches and expressions of resistance to prevailing curatorial conventions. The chapter concludes with an account of the Museum as a custodian of places of trauma, grief, remembrance and witnessing, exploring a range of sites and artistic projects worldwide.
