On Itineracy

This chapter expands on themes introduced in Chapter 13 , examining precarious, itinerant and transnational art practices beyond the Museum and its precincts. Also considered in this chapter are curatorial and ethical issues arising from the transposition of traditional and customary ‘non-art’ practices and rituals of First Nations Peoples to contemporary biennials. This leads to an examination of ‘neo-shamanic’ contemporary cultures, alongside projects which explore biophilic perspectives, interspecies interactions and emergent ‘new materialist’ approaches to art production. The chapter concludes with a reflection—echoing themes already touched upon—on social and relational aesthetics and practices.
