Reclaiming Memory

This chapter expands on decolonial themes introduced in earlier chapters, exploring contemporary memory practice, as manifested in the work of a large number of artists worldwide, at the outset revisiting aspects of counter-memorial approaches introduced in Chapter 7. These include contested colonial monuments (‘statue wars’); site-specific memory projects; LGBTQI perspectives; archives; architectural vocabularies; reflections on landscape and ruins; and projects of ‘unforgetting’ nameless victims of trauma. The chapter concludes with an account of emerging research, artistic and exhibitionary approaches to forensic investigation and witnessing.
