Fermentation Residues and Miscellanies: ‘What Else to Offer?’

In the search for aquafeed improvement and/or potential marine protein and lipid replacements in aquafeed, a variety of waste plant materials from industrial processes have been tested for potential valorization. Among these materials, dried distillers grains (DDGS) with solubles stand out quantitatively. The increased production and availability of biofuels and the chemical composition of DDGS make this coproduct a logical plant-based candidate for fishmeal replacement in aquafeeds. DDGS is high in energy and relatively high in protein, but is deficient in essential amino acids (Lys, Trp), which must be added from external sources. Due to the newness of the subject, there are conflicting results even in omnivorous species. Genetically modified crops and their effects on nontarget species and wood as a feed supplement complete this chapter.
