Coastal wetlands rely on freshwater inflow for two reasons: the water itself that is needed by plant foundation species and the sediment that helps to build wetland habitats. There is a climatic gradient along the Texas coast with decreasing rain and inflow from the northeast to the southwest. Along this gradient, the percentage contribution of freshwater requiring habitats, for example, saltwater marsh, decreases. In contrast, freshwater-sensitive habitats, for example, seagrass and tidal flats, increase along the climatic gradient with drier conditions.
