In human-dominated landscapes, large carnivores are often slandered due to the possible threat to domestic animals and human life. However, carnivores sharing resources with human populations can provide beneficial services, especially in urban landscapes. We studied the ecosystem services provided by leopards (Panthera pardus fusca) to the residents of the conurbation of Jaipur, India. The leopards of Jhalana Reserve Forest (JRF), Jaipur, depend on free-ranging domestic dogs (FRD) as their primary diet source (43%). Developing countries like India strive to control the FRD population as they are vectors of zoonoses of public health concern and are a menace to human life, wildlife, and livestock alike. We observed that by preying on FRD, leopards considerably reduced both the number of dog bites per year and rabies transmission rate, compared to neighboring urban areas. This greatly reduces the significant cost of sterilization of the FRD population and of medical care for afflicted citizens. Every year, the leopards contribute to reducing the FRD population by ca. 1150 individuals, saving the estimated sterilization costs of US$34,500 and also saving human lives (ca.75) from rabies transmission annually. Our study gives a different perspective to the impact of large carnivores sharing human-dominated landscapes, redefining human-wildlife conflict/co-existence and emphasizes the need to quantitatively gauge the positive effects of carnivores on urban ecosystems.
