Ecosystem Services Provided by Insects in Tropical Cities: The Role of Bees, Dung Beetles and Odonates

Conserving and restoring ecosystem services in urban areas is especially important because it has a direct impact on various aspects of human life, such as vulnerability to disturbances, and improve the health, safety, and quality of life of their inhabitants. A wide diversity of insects provides ecosystem services in cities, such as pollination, recycling of organic matter, biological control of harmful species, among others; however, urbanization represents a great filter to most of them. In the tropics, the impacts of urbanization can be especially severe due to the high biodiversity and the rate at which urban areas are expanding, but our comprehension of the effects of urbanization on insects is heavily biased toward temperate regions. Insect research efforts in tropical cities appear to be very isolated, showing the need to understand biodiversity patterns in the face of urbanization. To make the right decisions in the conservation of ecosystem services provided by insects in tropical cities with a broader point of view, it is crucial to seek a multi taxonomic approach, to help us identify the features of the urban landscape that contribute to their conservation in the tropics. In this chapter, we analyze the available literature on bees, dung beetles, and odonates, which provide us various services in tropical cities, namely pollination, recycling of organic matter and the biological control of harmful species. We review the information of the multiple taxa in tropical cities at different scales: individuals, populations, communities, and ecosystems, revealing that most of the research are focused on communities or population scales for the three analyzed groups. We found that some ecological patterns in tropical cities contrast with those from other regions, but for finding general patterns more research is needed. We review certain characteristics of the urban landscape that can favor the conservation of insects that provide ecosystem services in tropical cities, but we also highlight the importance of including the social perception of beneficial insects in different contexts. Finally, we will discuss possible conservation strategies in tropical cities, identifying knowledge gaps and suggesting future lines of research.
