With the increasing prominence of virtual teams, the digital workplace has introduced unique challenges and opportunities for leaders and team members alike. This study focuses on investigating the significant leadership challenges encountered by managers of multicultural virtual teams within Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Singapore. The central goal is to propose actionable recommendations aimed at improving team performance and collaboration in such settings. To achieve this objective, qualitative data were gathered through semi-structured online interviews with business leaders responsible for managing diverse teams across various sectors. The thematic analysis uncovered substantial cultural communication barriers, as well as challenges in trust and relationship-building, which were intensified by the absence of physical interaction in virtual environments. The key findings underline the critical importance of enhancing cultural awareness, fostering effective communication, and strategically utilizing digital platforms for collaboration. This research emphasizes the significance of adaptive leadership in effectively managing multicultural virtual teams. Furthermore, it suggests future directions for exploring the impacts of digital platforms, enhancing leadership training effectiveness in virtual environments, and monitoring longitudinal changes.
