Healthy and Toxic Workplace and School Cultures

In this chapter, first we provide an overview of healthy and toxic workplace cultures from an organizational psychology research perspective. Then we consider healthy and toxic school cultures. We explore possible impacts of toxic school and school district cultures on staff member wellness, on employee development and productivity, and on student learning outcomes—as well as parent and community perceptions of school system effectiveness. We also provide a leadership vignette of Canadian school district employee engagement and workplace culture, including questions for reader reflection.
