The chapter investigates the main EU directives regarding coastal areas, aiming to assess the European community's consideration of socio-environmental development along urban coasts, particularly in the Mediterranean. Thus, the Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) framework is pertinent, offering a project-oriented approach to coastal management. MSP involves analysing and efficiently allocating maritime functions and uses in order to minimise conflicts among coastal stakeholders and maximise benefits from human activities, all while safeguarding marine ecosystems. It is connected to land-sea interactions, amplifying the complexity of urban littoral planning and intertwining with the study of public spaces along the coastal interface.
