Simulations and Online Laboratory Experiments for Courses of Communication Systems Developed Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and Subsequent Utilization

The paper provides an analysis of how the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional in Argentina adapted its Communication Systems course to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The course, which is part of the Electronic Engineering program, traditionally includes a mix of theoretical instruction and hands-on laboratory experiments. However, with the onset of the pandemic, access to physical laboratories was restricted, prompting the teaching team to seek alternative methods to deliver practical education. They turned to online simulations and remote laboratory experiments, utilizing software-defined radio tools such as OpenWebRX and GNU Radio. These tools enabled students to engage with the course material in a practical manner, despite the lack of physical access to laboratory equipment. OpenWebRX, a web-based software-defined radio receiver, was used to study amplitude modulation (AM) signals. GNU Radio, on the other hand, was employed to simulate a wide range of signals, including exponential modulations, providing students with a visual and interactive understanding of complex communication principles. Students appreciated the flexibility of being able to conduct experiments at any time, which facilitated a deeper understanding of the course material. The teaching staff also benefited from the experience, expanding their expertise in digital signal processing and software-defined radio technologies.
