Change management skills are essential for family physicians. The Kotter model for change can serve as an important framework for managing change. The 8 steps of create urgency, build coalition, develop vision, communicate buy-in, empower others, generate quick wins, consolidate gains, and anchor change in the culture is a useful framework to navigate and manage change in residency programs. Framed in the themes of communication, commitment and collaboration, this chapter explores each step in the context of significant changes that occurred as one residency transitioned to a new faculty structure and another residency began. The perspectives on this change, at different stages, are shared by leaders in this program, from the chair to the program director to chief residents who share vignettes from different stages that relate to each stage of change and offer insight and direction on how to move through each stage of change successfully with a focus on a people-centered approach to effectively managing change.
