The development of an educational curriculum is one of the most important, yet oftentimes daunting, tasks of managing a family medicine residency program. The curriculum must encompass everything that a family physician must know to be competently trained and ready for graduation into autonomous practice (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. ACGME family medicine program requirements. 2023.). The educational curriculum should use various teaching modalities in different settings including didactic lectures, block rotations, longitudinal educational experiences and simulation. Following this paradigm, there are a myriad of options to enhance and deliver content to residents (Thomas et al., Curriculum Development for Medical Education: A Six-Step Approach. Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, 2022). Today’s resident learners are adept at using multiple electronic methods of communication and gathering information. Program directors and faculty educators must adjust to how resident-physicians learn best in order to ensure the competency of these future leaders of medicine. This chapter will explore current adult learning theories and principles and explain how to incorporate them into a structured six-step approach to curriculum development.
