“Re-enchant!” Such seems to be the new ecopolitical rallying cry in the face of the current disastrous climate situation. Depending on the writer, what needs to be re-enchanted can slightly vary—the world, science, urban spaces, art—but each time, what is expressed is that to effectively tackle the problem, we must first change our perspective and transform our relationships in order to extract ourselves from a certain disenchantment that is singled out as being the primary cause. Meanwhile, in the world of artist-run film laboratories—those crucial sites for the continuation of photochemical experimental moving-image practices—we find similar calls for re-enchantment. This apparent coincidence can inform us both about the specificity of contemporary practices of experimental cinema in France, and allow us to clarify what is meant by this necessity for ecological re-enchantment.
