The effects of the conflict between Georgia and the breakaway territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia have changed women’s roles and fostered a new type of activism. This chapter refers to “transformative activism,” which emerged from and is shaped by women’s experiences of conflict, particularly displacement. It also shifts from narratives of victimhood to leadership aimed at making the voices of conflict-affected populations heard. The work of Ekaterine Gamakharia illustrates this type of activism through her experience of displacement, witnessing her mother’s activism, and taking action to transform the lives of conflict-affected populations. This form of activism emphasizes grassroots-level work, as well as advocacy aimed at influencing decisions and policy-making as peacebuilding efforts.
