The struggle for the rights, dignity, and survival of Trans people in Peru gives new meaning to the idea that the personal is political. In this chapter, Ana Flavia Chávez Pedraza shares the story of her journey from a child certain that she was born into a body that didn’t reflect her gender identity, into a journalist, Congressional candidate, and Trans movement leader. By sharing her story of struggle, transformation, and evolution, Ana Flavia weaves together the often separated stories of the personal and political. She shows how her struggle to find an accepting home led her to open the first shelter for LGBTQ youth in Peru, how her exclusion from traditional careers led her to be a successful entrepreneur, and how her experiences with discrimination against Trans people led her to challenge unjust laws and policies. Ana Flavia’s determination to not only survive but thrive has led her to overcome obstacles she personally faced, to identify the barriers faced by all Trans people in her community, and to work to remove them.
