What is reality? And how should we act in this reality? To overcome the multiple crises, we need new ways of thinking as well as new ways of acting. Western epistemological theories are compared in this article with Eastern epistemological approaches, in particular with the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta. Heinz v. Förster's constructivism is most similar to the constructivism derived from the Indian philosophy of Advaita Vedanta. While constructivist theories in the West have two levels, Advaita Vedanta has three levels. The third level of realization comprises the experience of the highest reality and the non-separateness of all beings. Recommendations for action can be derived from the synthesis of these two approaches. A new ethical imperative for action is developed based on interconnectedness.
