Rethinking Organisational Communication in the Digital and Unprecedented Crises Era
摘要
The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic created several problems, including, but not limited to, prolonged and stringent lockdowns implemented by governments worldwide, resulting in unprecedented socio-economic burdens for citizens globally. Various organisations and government departments also faced challenges as communication shortcomings and gaps disrupted their normal operations. To exacerbate matters, the proliferation of fake news during the outbreak hindered numerous organisations and departments from functioning seamlessly. Some organisations conveyed conflicting messages through traditional media outlets, which were perceived as legitimate sources of information at the time. Qualitatively driven, this study investigates how communication units in different organisations operated during the unprecedented, precarious, and chaotic situation of COVID-19. Additionally, it seeks to understand how these circumstances shaped the daily communication strategies of these organisations moving forward. Data were obtained through document analysis, examination of media messages, and in-depth interviews. The study was guided by the Media System Dependency Theory (MSDTT), which posits that during crises or instabilities, societies are more likely to rely on mass media for information, potentially making them vulnerable to its effects. The study proposes communication strategies, such as maximising the potential of digital media platforms, for organisations globally to communicate decisively during unprecedented crises. These strategies are suggested for implementation to enhance organisational communication in challenging situations.
