Internal Social Media and Organisational Communication: Opportunities and Challenges
摘要
Social Media (SM) is a powerful communication tool that can be used to reach and interact with key stakeholders of the organisation. Literature reveals that SM can benefit the ways in which organisations communicate, particularly internal communication. This chapter focuses on the opportunities and challenges to organisational communication related to SM by exploring various aspects. It presents an overview of the dynamic nature of organisational communication as well as the conceptualisation of an internal SM-centred lens. The internal SM landscape is contextualised with reference to the increased adoption of SM platforms and the foundational elements of SM. Thereafter, key elements of internal SM communication are highlighted with specific reference to the value thereof for internal communication. In addition, the chapter investigates fundamental issues related to SM and internal organisational communication that set it apart from traditional communication. Fundamental issues related to the management of SM and internal communication are addressed, including SM policy (transparency, privacy, and decision-making), and the monitoring of SM activity. A case study is used to illustrate how organisations could incorporate SM into their communication.
