The referendum of 23 June 2016, that triggered the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union after over 40 years of membership (‘Brexit’), will no doubt remain one of the landmark dates in British and European history. The exit of the UK from the EU had a huge impact on life in the UK and the EU, both in the private sphere (e.g. on workplace and job market dynamics) and in the public sphere (e.g. as citizens). All dimensions were impacted: political, economic, financial, psychological, cultural, and of course legal. Law, as a sociological phenomenon that permeates and largely regulates our collective life and endeavours has been hugely affected by the UK’s decision to leave the EU. A study that focuses on the impact of Brexit on key aspects of the law in the UK and the EU is therefore an important contribution to the understanding of this absolutely crucial period in European history.
