Unraveling Challenges in Software Development Education

Software development education encounters diverse challenges affecting students, academic institutions, and the industry. This study, conducted in South Africa, delves into these challenges through insights from software development students, higher education institutions, and professionals. Rooted in a larger project focusing on the relevance of software development education for students and the industry, this article synthesizes findings from four related articles and relevant literature. Key findings highlight issues such as narrow perceptions of computing careers, mismatches between skills and expectations, and the rapid pace of technological evolution. Collaboration among stakeholders is recommended to address these challenges effectively. Proposed strategies include continuous training for educators to stay abreast of industry developments, facilitating student workplace experience with industry support, and implementing mentorship programs. By addressing these challenges collectively, the educational ecosystem can empower software developers to navigate the complexities of the digital age successfully.
