Personal epistemology is described as an individual’s conceptualizations about knowledge and knowing, including what knowledge is, how knowledge is acquired, and how one justifies and evaluates what they and others know. Within psychology, research has examined personal epistemology through developmental, cognitive, and sociocultural lenses highlighting its importance in learning and reasoning. Personal epistemology has changed several times since its emergence in response to evolving evidence and methods, interdisciplinary critiques, and paradigmatic shifts across the discipline. Personal epistemology research has always been engaged with philosophical concepts such as absolutism, rationalism, relativism, and subjectivity. However, examining personal epistemology through critical frameworks expands its compatibility and potential for application in theoretical and philosophical psychology by maintaining ethical and validating explanations and methods for diverse and varied epistemologies that transcend previous understandings.
