Qualitative Psychology
摘要
Qualitative inquiry is an influential domain of psychology that relates to the study of meaning as it emerges in people’s experiences and social practices. Having foundations in early phenomenological and clinical uses, qualitative psychology now encompasses a diverse range of procedures and epistemological perspectives that advance the field due to their ability to address uncharted research questions. Although they have been historically marginalized in psychology due to the early dominance of post-positivism in the field, qualitative methods have gained legitimacy as scholars and practitioners have begun to recognize their unique contributions to science, practice, and policy. However, qualitative methodologies have continued to be misunderstood and further training is needed. Qualitative approaches have tended to be evaluated using post-positivist standards that reflect quantitative practices rather than standards that are based in the logic of qualitative analysis. However, recent advances, such as the unifying framework of methodological integrity and disciplinary reporting standards, have reflected qualitative psychology’s movement into the field’s canon of rigorous research processes. As well, the rise of critical approaches, methodological pluralism, and qualitative forms of meta-analysis has indicated that the field has continued to grow and evolve. These developments suggest that the field is steadily on a route of continued innovation, with an appreciation for many types of available methodological and theoretical perspectives.
