There is now a consensus that the sustainability problem can be solved only by promoting environment-oriented actions. However, it is unclear how this objective can be achieved, as it requires reorienting human motivation toward environment-oriented actions. Motivation is a psychological state that is considered to precede, and also integrate, sets of actions, in a way that promotes the selection, direction, and completion of high-level goals. It is postulated to underlie diverse human behavior. Because of this, there exist many theories of motivational processes, including models of pro-environmental motivation (PEM). Reviewing discussions on PEM, the entry highlights recent approaches that integrate existing work on PEM with enactive and embodied cognition theory. This view proposes a dynamical model, where PEM emerges through micro-level interactions with local environments.
