Jerry Alan Fodor
摘要
Jerry Alan Fodor was among the most influential thinkers of the past century. Essentially an analytic philosopher, he made his most significant contributions in the domains of philosophy of mind and cognitive science. In many ways, he can be considered as one of the architects of cognitive science, a field conceived at the intersection of multiple disciplines, including psychology, philosophy, linguistics, neuroscience, and computer science. Fodor’s most enduring achievement was his effort to provide this emerging area with a coherent philosophical foundation. Yet, even while advancing this ambitious project, Fodor drew attention to its limits, a theme that became more pronounced in his later writings. His essays, characterized by polemical precision and conceptual clarity, offer a lucid perspective on the cognitive science. Paradoxically, some of Fodor’s best-known theories remain central to ongoing debates in philosophy and cognitive science, yet without the precision and clarity he originally intended, and sometimes in distorted or misrepresented forms.
