Guattari’s Philosophy and the Being of the Possible: From Psychoanalysis and Transversality to Schizoanalytic Cartographies

In this chapter, I examine Guattari’s approach to the unconscious and its sources. I then deduce from it the core aspects of Guattari’s ontology, vis-à-vis-Deleuze’s. Finally, I analyse side by side Guattari’s notions of deterritorialization and determinability, suggesting that, from 1980 onwards, the latter supplements the former one in Guattari’s writings, which thereby offer a twofold, and hence complex, modal philosophy. These considerations, I argue, can help us gain an adequately nuanced picture of Guattari’s thought.
