People of Guatemalan Heritage

  • Cory Salcedo

摘要

Individuals of Guatemalan heritage are one of many cultures grouped under the umbrella of Hispanic/LatinX populations in the United States and elsewhere. Although similarities range among language paradigms for Hispanic/LatinX individuals, this unique cultural group has an abundance of linguistic differences in addition to religious, cultural, and economic structures that must be acknowledged to adequately care for this population. Health-care providers must be knowledgeable regarding the specific cultural characteristics and behavioral practices for Guatemalan individuals in order to provide individualized care that is sensitive to cultural necessities. Although each methodology to practice may not adequately reflect the distinctiveness encompassed within each Guatemalan profile, understanding the basis of cultural sensitivity and competence and necessity for patient healing is a core component for successful nursing practice.
