People of European American Heritage

  • Larry D. Purnell

摘要

The European American culture evolved from those of early immigrants, primarily from Northern European countries. Today, the United States includes immigrants or descendants of immigrants from almost every nation and culture of the world. Americans, and individuals from other groups who have assimilated, value individualism, free speech, freedom of choice, independence, self-reliance, confidence, “doing” rather than “being,” egalitarian relationships, non-hierarchal status of individuals, individual responsibility, achievement status over ascribed status, volunteerism, friendliness, openness, futuristic temporality, technology, and the ability to control the environment. Many emphasize material possessions and physical comfort however, aggregate data are true for the group but not necessarily for the individual, so this profile may not be accurate for everyone who self-identifies with the European American culture.
