Type One Jolts

As Lamisi walked through the hot busy market she wondered whether her PhD thesis in Psychiatry was worth all this trouble. The puzzling condition Mrs. Adabongo had was the subject of her research. Sadly, Mrs. Adabongo had lost all her wits and was unable to string together a single intelligible response to anything. On good days, what she said all day was, “I said tofiakwa, minus me,” then she would begin to wail and sob inconsolably. On not-so-good days Mrs. Adabongo would beat her chest wildly and tear out her own hair. It was a difficult scene to watch. That picture, in Lamisi’s mind, kept her focused on her present mission to interview market traders who had been colleagues with Mrs. Adabongo over the years.
