Electrodiagnostic Testing

  • Jeffrey A. Allen

摘要

Nerve conduction studies and needle electromyography are useful tools that can assist the clinician in the diagnosis of diseases of the peripheral nervous system. Latency, amplitude, duration, and conduction velocity on nerve conduction studies help assess the integrity of motor and sensory nerves. Needle EMG analysis of spontaneous activity, motor unit action potential (MUAP) morphology, and MUAP recruitment provide more specific information regarding potential neuropathic or myopathic injuries. The combined NCS/EMG interpretation takes into account both electrodiagnostic components to help the clinician localize the problem, understand the pathophysiology, assess the severity, and potentially arrive at the diagnosis.
