Teaching Enterprise Resource Planning Systems and Business Process Management in Tandem Using the Enterprise Online Guide

Enterprise Resource Planning systems are arguably the most important information systems in almost any larger organization. This makes them an central topic of information systems education. A key challenge for a course on these systems is their sheer complexity with hundreds of transaction types and tens of thousands of database tables. In this paper, we explain how models of the Enterprise Online Guide can be used to facilitate the navigation of this complexity. More specifically, we focus on the relationship between process models and database tables to provide students with an understanding of Enterprise Resource Planning systems. We discuss the effects of this approach for learning key concepts of business process management.
