From Design to Evaluation: Students Experiencing the BPM Lifecycle Hands-on

Business process management (BPM) has gained significant traction in both industry and academia, leading to its inclusion in many universities’ curricula. Due to the broad scope of BPM and its intersections with many other disciplines, there is a considerable amount of content to cover when teaching the basics to students. Hence, courses mostly focus on teaching the theoretical foundations. However, to successfully apply BPM in practice, i.e., to design, analyze, implement, and evaluate real-world business processes, hands-on experience is necessary. In this paper, we present a course structure guiding students through one iteration of the whole business process lifecycle for a specific scenario, encouraging the students to explore the various methods available in each phase. In addition to the course structure, we share our lessons learned from the first iteration and the students’ feedback.
