Extending CMMN for Effective Management of Data in Knowledge-Intensive Processes

Knowledge-intensive processes, such as product innovation, product development, and emergency management, are increasingly gaining importance in modern organisations and society. As such processes are characterised by a high degree of flexibility, creativity, and complexity, they usually rely on different techniques and technologies compared to traditional “well-structured” processes. Accordingly, the Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN) was proposed similarly to BPMN for the structured processes. Even though CMMN is certainly necessary in this field, our preliminary analysis revealed some shortcomings. In this article, we address some of these shortcomings related to the presentation and manipulation of data. More precisely, we are dealing with the extension of the element Case File Item and its associated elements, where metadata is poorly defined. With the help of the existing Dublin Core metadata element set, the element Case File Item was extended structurally and visually to achieve an improved understanding of the business process models.
