Characterization of Dredged Soil for Sustainable Reuse with Silica Fume

Large amounts of sediments are dredged from canal, seaports and harbours in Kerala. As there is shortage of open land, disposing of these dredged soils poses significant challenge. This study aims to utilize the dredge soil for a potential application as subgrade material in highway projects. This study investigated the characterization of the dredge material collected from Vyttila Cochin and the sustainable use of the dredged soil by treating with stabilizing material. A detailed study was conducted for the geotechnical characterization of the dredged soil. Silica fume was used as the stabilizing material for treating the dredged soil. Different percentages of silica fume (4, 8, 12 and 16%) were used for treating the soil. Based on the compaction tests and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tests the optimum percentage for the stabilizer was found out. Also the variation in shear parameters and load—Settlement behavior of altered soil were examined by performing miniplate load tests and direct shear testing. The results indicated that the dredged soil from canals etc., can be utilized successfully as pavement subgrade material with appropriate stabilization. This study underscores the importance of sustainable practices in managing dredged soil and offers a viable solution for its reuse, contributing to environmental conservation efforts in Kerala. By addressing concerns regarding long-term effectiveness, durability, economic feasibility, and practical implementation, we strive to promote the widespread adoption of this environmentally friendly approach, thereby mitigating the environmental challenges associated with dredged soil disposal.
