Effect of Chlorides on Strength and Durability Properties of Concrete with Mineral Admixtures

The use of mineral admixture in all aspect is a very effective way to achieve a sustainable construction practice while it faces a severe challenge which is the corrosion of reinforcement. It is essential to establish the relative effectiveness of mineral admixture against the chloride attack. In this investigation concrete with optimum percentage of Blast furnace slag, Metakaolin, and Fly ash are exposed to aggressive chloride attack by wet and dry cycle. The strength and durability properties of concrete are monitored before and after the chloride attack. The cover concrete attained a strong resistance to the chloride ingress by the use of supplementary cementitious materials. After 170 days of exposure the slag concrete gives strength increment by 18%. And the water absorption of mineral admixed concrete shows a reduction in value twice that of control mix. Chloride ingress was far better for GGBFS concrete which gives less negative corrosion potential. GGBFS is the most effective one and in the availability aspect metakaolin need more attention.
