Analysis of Noise Pollution Levels by GIS Based Mapping for Angamaly Municipality

Urban noise pollution is a serious concern all over the world which affects the health and livability of an area. Long term exposure to loud noise is associated with cardiovascular problems, hearing loss, sleep interference and anti-social behaviour. However, many areas do not have proper strategies for controlling this problem. This research paper evaluates the noise pollution in the municipality of Angamaly by integrating Geographic Information Systems. The paper reveals the diurnal and nocturnal variation of noise by positioning the sound level meter along the roads and data were collected for different time periods. Processed data were further analyzed using ArcGIS 10.7.1 to produce high-resolution maps of noise. GIS noise maps are powerful visualization tools that show the areas of high noise pollution and its levels. With this spatial data, stakeholders can pinpoint noisy hotspots, patterns and sources to formulate appropriate remedial measures. This paper brings out the need to integrate GIS in addressing urban noise pollution. The results reveal that awareness and preventive action can help reduce the harmful health impacts of urban noise pollution. The study also aims to provide useful recommendations for urban planners, environmental managers and policy makers to frame appropriate strategies for creating sustainable and healthy cities.
