Determining the causes of tropospheric ozone (O3) pollution episodes in areas far from anthropogenic emissions sources is complex, such as in a natural park. We compared measurements from a VOC analyzer located in the rural area of the Valderejo Natural Park in Northern Spain with simulated concentrations using the WRF-CAMx model. Results show a good agreement between observed and modeled trends for main anthropogenic VOC, while for biogenic VOC local processes are decisive for O3 production and therefore more complex to reproduce. These results are expected to be of interest for improving the understanding of photochemistry in rural areas.
