AERMOD is the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) preferred regulatory dispersion model for predicting ground-level pollutant impacts within 50 km of an emission source. Analyses have shown AERMOD to both overpredict and underpredict ground-level concentrations downwind of a building due to a turbulent wake that forms, drawing the plume downward. In recent years there have been separate initiatives by the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA) and the EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) to address cases of underprediction and overprediction by AERMOD when buildings are present. A&WMA and ORD have each recommended a set of changes in AERMOD which have been implemented as experimental alpha options. Individual and combinations of options were evaluated to determine the option or combination of options the provide the greatest improvement to AERMOD.
