Green Auditing as a Catalyst for Sustainable Environment in Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry

The destruction of natural habitat and eco system due to the work of multinational companies who exploit the hydrocarbons and other natural resources beneath the earth has become a global concern and increases the need for assessing the organizational commitment and services offered toward sustainable environment. Green auditing is now considered as being the major tool for environmental management and sustainability. This article investigates the frequently thought tools, techniques, and current developments in green auditing. The essence is to assess how these developments could help in addressing the environmental challenges faced by the oil and gas producing communities in Nigeria. The paper explores the approach and techniques used by auditors in assessing organizations commitments towards creating sustainable and friendly environment. The paper urged that environmental issues in Nigerian oil and gas sector needs structural and institutional enforcement and therefore green auditing could serve as a powerful tool for improving greener and sustainable environment in the oil rich area.
